New Applications Of Droplet Microfluidics: From Bio-Mimetics To Tissue Engineering
The goal of the program is to develop new microfluidic methods of formulation of three-dimensional structures from aqueous micro-droplets as building blocks and to demonstrate their applications in i) synthesis of capsules for drug delivery and ii) tissue engineering. During the last decade microfluidics has emerged as a powerful tool in life sciences based on precise generation and manipulation of droplets as isolated bioreactors. However, formation of 3D structures from droplets, offering great potential in biotechnology, is poorly understood. Based on our recent discovery of self-assembly of droplets into regular two- and three-dimensional structures we will study aggregation of droplets i) functionalized by lipids towards their assembly into multi-compartment capsules with controlled 3D spatial arrangement of compartments for sequential release of encapsulated material and ii) loaded with living cells for growing micro-tissues for new drug testing assays.
