Lenticular and vitreal light scattering and refraction for tomorrow's eye diagnostics
The microstructural changes of the cornea, crystalline lens or the vitreous associated with ageing or external factors can increase the intraocular light scattering, which manifests as opaque regions leading to decreased visual quality. Accurate refractive index measurements of the crystalline lens are important for the development of surgical treatments of presbyopia. Therefore, age-related modifications of optical properties of the ocular structures can serve as potential diagnostic indicator of diseases affecting vision. The project aims at the development and clinical validation of novel imaging-based platforms to extract spatially resolved information on the light scattering and refraction in the eye. The obtained quantitative data on the optical properties of ocular structures enable objective assessment of patients with different types of opacities and presbyopia. We would like to implement a multidisciplinary approach that integrates clinical ophthalmology and vision science with physical optics, bio-optics and optical engineering. The project will also allow for understanding fundamental aspects of physical (optical) phenomena in the ageing eye.
