perspective
2014 - 2020

The core aim of the project is the community reinvigoration of the Międzyrzec Podlaski City and the provision of support for individuals at risk of exclusion. The project encompasses redevelopment measures in the brownfield area of the former sand and gravel pit to convert it into a space for recreation and tourism.

The former pit’s area was derelict and could not have been used for local community purposes. Following redevelopment, it became a safe space for recreation and leisure, as well as cultural events.

The work packages completed under the Project included:

  • construction and installation of street furniture;
  • construction of a stage with a roof and auditorium;
  • construction of hygiene facilities;
  • construction of volleyball and basketball playing surfaces;
  • construction of a tennis court;
  • construction of a gym;
  • construction of playgrounds;
  • beach area improvements (construction of floating jetties, floating fountain, changing room);
  • construction of an ice rink with a canopy;
  • construction of facilities for local businesses (food and beverages, other services);
  • construction of a pump track;
  • construction of a street workout area.

The sporting and recreation equipment is meant to activate the local community. New pavement, a car park, paved footpaths and cycle paths, security cameras and lighting all made the area more accessible and safe. The waterside area has gained an improved appeal, promoting recreation, tourism, local business and the city itself. The project has had a positive impact on the natural environment through the installation of a 4 kW PV system.

Moreover, a total of 560 metres of commune roads were built as part of the project. Sixteen buildings received disability facilities. The redevelopment effort covered a total area of more than 1.5 ha. Also, an area spanning more than 700 sq. m was prepared to accommodate local businesses.

It is estimated that the social, cultural and tourist infrastructure provided by the project will be used by 3,000 people a year.
