Silesian Regional Educational Centre
Koszęcin is one of the biggest and most picturesque communes in the district of Lubliniec. Set amid woods, fields and meadows and free from industrial pollution, it draws increasing numbers of visitors. Trails have been marked out in the area, taking in a variety of monuments of religious and secular architecture.
Koszęcin is the biggest dancing and singing town in the region. Its beautiful stately palace is home to Stanisław Hadyna’s “Śląsk” Song and Dance Ensemble, one of the biggest, most renowned and most popular Polish folk ensembles, established in 1953. Initially, its artistic mission was to present the centuries-old folk culture of Silesia, but later its repertoire also began to include the music from other regions of Poland. In recent years a new programme called “In Europe with Śląsk” was created, featuring songs and dances from European countries. The ensemble has performed in nearly fifty countries around the world.
Surrounded by a 19th-century English-style park, Koszęcin Palace is one of Poland’s biggest neoclassical palatial complexes. Built in the 16th century, it was abandoned in 1945 by its last owners, the princely family of Hohenlohe-Ingelfingen. It was they who had the residence altered in 1829–1830, which gave it today’s appearance.
Until 1998, the palace was off-limits to the public and only the members of the Ensemble could use it. Adam Pastuch, the manager, opened it for visitors as the Silesian Regional Educational Centre, and following renovation work, the residence regained its former glory. The tour of the palace includes the Green Room, the Choral Room and the Fireplace Room, the latter converted into a stately dining room. The left-wing attic now offers accommodation for visitors and contains a fitness club.
The Educational Centre is a venue for concerts, music shows and theatre performances. Modernization made it possible for “Śląsk” to perform on the site and invite other ensembles. The Centre also trains teachers, instructors, school pupils of all ages and children. Singing and dancing workshops are held here for folk groups, and the Summer School of Arts runs classes of modern dance. Koszęcin has become a meeting place for the artistic, academic and journalist communities. And the lush surroundings of the palace provide the backdrop to attractive outdoor events, including the Silesian Art Garden in May and the Artistic Picnic in June.
The project won the main award in the 3rd contest Poland Even More Beautiful. Seven Miracles of EU Funds in the Historic Building category.
