Diversification of business activity through the purchase of railway stock and transhipment facilities to provide intermodal transport services
Currently, the Polish transport sector is characterized by a lack of sustainability, because the vast majority of transport services are provided via the road network. This is due to the state of the infrastructure of the Polish freight market, the biggest problem of which is the limited availability of modern infrastructure, obsolete rolling stock at disposal, as well as the orientation of carriers on the transport of bulk products, e.g. hard coal or aggregates. Intermodal transport takes place mainly with the use of containers (96.4%), while the market does not have enough platforms to carry out intermodal transport. Out of 69 companies engaged in freight transport in Poland, only 13 offer intermodal transport
The purpose of the project implemented in the period from 20.08.2018 to 30.06.2022 is the purchase of specialized rolling stock adapted to the carriage of goods in intermodal loading units together with transhipment devices that enable the commencement of intermodal transport services, i.e. a combination of two branches of rail transport and road as part of the transport of goods / materials / raw materials / semi-finished products in the Belarus-Poland relationship.
Implementation of the Project will directly allow to solve, among others, the following barriers, which were identified in the implementation of intermodal transport:
- The barrier related to the lack of platforms enabling intermodal transport using loading units. The Company, through the implementation of the Project consisting in the purchase of rolling stock enabling the development of intermodal transport, including in particular within the Kronospan Organization, will directly contribute to increasing the number of rolling stock (platforms) transporting goods / materials / raw materials / semi-finished products based on loading units (containers) , which will directly limit the abovementioned barriers.
- Economic barriers in the development of intermodal transport – through the implementation of the Project, the number of rolling stock for freight transport using intermodal units will be increased. At the same time, despite the fact that this Project does not include the construction of a new terminal / railway siding, one of its direct results will be the availability of railway sidings at the Applicant’s disposal for the needs of intermodal transport services for entities outside the Organization, and thus will solve the existing barrier in the insufficient number of points reloading.
The direct result of the implementation of this Project will be an increase in the volume of transport work taken over from road transport, which will amount to 191 431.1 thousand TEU-km for all routes combined throughout the Project’s lifetime (30 years).
The project will contribute to the stimulation of the domestic branch of transport, which is intermodal transport, as well as to the development of rail as a more efficient and ecological means of transport, and hence to the increase in the number of carriers providing intermodal services. By acquiring 150 platforms, it will improve the overall image of intermodal transport as a means of competition against other modes of transport. It will allow the transport of not only mass products, but also allow combined transport of various types of goods, thanks to which it will increase the volume of freight transport and optimize the costs associated with them.
